The $20bn showpiece of Chinese engineering, involving huge amounts of earth moving around the infamous Yangtze river area, and costing thousands of people their homes could be a disaster, warns official Communist news agency Xinhua.

New measures are desperately needed to prevent the whole hydro-electric scheme becoming a disaster. Land feuds are erupting as the populace attempt to reconstruct their lives following large scale evacuations.
