$500m deal to make Chernobyl safer
Nuclear proponents beware, the cost of cleaning up reactors at the end of their lifetime can be more expensive than the entire running costs when in service. The nuclear reactor at Chernobyl is finally to be totally encased in steel to prevent further radioactive pollution seeping from the current concrete tomb. French firm Novarka has been awarded the contract to erect the 100 meter high edifice. Critics slate the idea that this is the end of the problem, pointing out that a similar scheme conducted in the US has rotted and will itself need to renewed.
