Demonstrations continued in Rangoon, Burma, as Buddhists sought to bring to world attention the 50 year history of Burmese dictatorship by the military. Only massed ranks of the public protect the demonstrators from violent crackdowns by the Burmese police.
Recent fuel price rises have hit the population hard as income is low and economic activity sporadic. The situation could have been resolved years ago by concerted international pressure, however Russia and China continuously veto any proposals to try and force the military to step aside. The surprise is the response of South Africa which also is de facto keeping the military junta in power. Should Thabo Mbeki (Pres of South Africa), not realise that without years of international sanctions against apartheid in South Africa, which he fully endorsed, the changes there would not have taken place. Is there a whiff of hypocracy here?
