Chess Champ Garry Kasparov for President?

Only a decade ago Kasparov was atop the world chess stage, as a champion smashing his rivals, including winning a one sided title challenge from UK one-time prodigy Nigel Short. Following defeats by computer chess opponents Garry has turned his attention in recent years to politics.

Yesterday Kasparov was elected as candidate for the opposition in the important forthcoming Russia presidential race. Even though a popular candidate, Garry may still find his route to be Russia’s president voided. Present Premier Putin still has not announced which candidate he will be backing. It would be a pleasant surprise for western countries were Kasaparov to a) get his candidacy approved and b) win the presidential election.
