Chicago Sears Tower bomb plot trial begins

With the objective of bringing down the US government by fuelling a guerrilla war, seven men have gone on trial for plotting to bomb the Sears Tower in Chicago. The hearing, located in Miami, includes sensational charges that those who escaped the bombing of the Sears building would then be shot by waiting gunmen.

For the defence, lawyers argue that the whole operation was a sting mounted by the FBI, which the accused went along with solely to procure money from would be bomb plotters.

The charges, which date back more than a year, have meant that the defendants, all of whom plead not guilty, have been in jail for 15 months without trial. They planned to begin a jihad against the US, bombing and poisoning their way to civil war, say FBI informants.
