China flexes industrial muscle
Mattel, the giant US toy vendor, has been forced by the Chinese government to take back its criticisms of production standards in China so that reciprocal action is not taken against them in the form of higher taxes or regulations. Recently there have been large recalls of Mattel toy products made in China due to high lead content and quality issues. However Mattel executives are so worried about a tit-for-tat reaction a senior official was dispatched to Bejing to make a humiliating apology before product safety chiefs. More recalls of products made in China may be forthcoming.
