The bright and freshly washed Miliband has not excelled himself so far in his new role as British Foreign secretary. His knowledge of international affairs came rather unstuck following his interview by Newsnight’s Jeremy Paxman.
David revealed a brittle side to his nature when pushed by Paxman. Now after pledging support to South Africa, Japan, Brazil and India for seats on the UN security council, to the barely disguised annoyance of Egypt, Nigeria and Germany, (particularly the latter, Tony Blair had promised support to Germany), Miliband has been forced to retreat on his UN policy within 24 hours.
It had been hoped, following the rather bland performance of Labour party apparatchik Margaret Beckett as UK foreign secretary, that the new incumbent could display a detailed knowledge of international affairs. Alas, David Miliband, the former Millbank strategist and Labour PR man, has not yet displayed political gravitas. But who else is there?
