MI6 negotiations with Taliban a good thing?

Taliban and Opiate productionThis has been going on for a while, and a good idea too. If there is the possibility to hold talks with the Taliban, zealots that they are, MI6 should proceed. Hopefully MI6 officers don’t forget you can’t believe much the Taliban agree to. Perhaps this motley group of bearded religious fundamentalists can be turned to go the peaceful route, so they become a peaceful bunch, for example, like the BNP.

The Taliban need a network of bank accounts and finance to operate, and this is where their connection with the opiate industry needs to be tackled. A conspiracy between MI6 and the Afghan government to spray the abundant fields of poppies with conventional pesticides will have farmers all over Afghanistan up in arms, unless they are well compensated. Few of these farmers have bank accounts, which is a shame as compensation could be paid into accounts and monitored.

The local Afghans feel they have to cooperate with the Taliban because in the future the UK and US forces will leave Afghanistan and they will left to deal with them alone. Even simple farmers know which side their bread is buttered. The solution to the connection between Taliban finances and the opium and heroin industries requires a new form of GM pesticides.

GM crops have been grown in the US for years now. Whether ethically good or bad it shows that genetic modification of crops is possible. Have any large US corporations such as Monsanto been contracted by the US government to produce pesticides which leave the growing cycle intact, but introduce a toxin into the flowering buds? That way the crop has been grown all the way to harvest rather than conventional spraying which is immediately obvious.
