Shame that the triumphal return of Benazir Bhutto was marred by possible Taleban extremism. Pakistan is teetering on the edge of going the way of Afghanistan, with religious zealots, like a Spanish Inquisition from the 17th century, thinking that God rewards murderers.
Of course Bhutto has many enemies from political parties within Pakistan, her father was killed in his pursuit of politics (well, and a few dollars in the bank as well), but Benazir’s deal with military President Musharraf may be the only way to pull Pakistan back from the brink of civil war.
The Brits found it very difficult to keep order in Waziristan, and so has Musharraf. But if Taleban from Afghanistan and Pakistan are operating there, if the Pakistan army cannot do the job, then the UK and US have to put more special forces in the region. Osama bin Laden appears to be living quite comfortably in the area, there may not be a McDonalds or Pizza Hut in Waziristan, but Bin Laden and his little army of crazies are having little difficulty in bringing over the local tribesmen to their side.
The Taleban were dealt a very heavy defeat following 9/11, it was the violence in Iraq which took the eye, and forces away from Afghanistan, allowing the Taleban time to recover, was it not?
