Even though the peoples democracy protests in Burma may have slipped down the news headlines in the past days, at least the UN, led by France, USA and UK are having a go at increasing pressure on the discredited Burmese army generals. Suggestions of a conspiracy between the Burmese leadership and Chinese officials may have validity.
For some while, China has been vetoing any statement that criticised Burma, and the UN resolution which has finally been passed, way after the violence has died down, is not as strong as democrats would have liked. Of course, even though the news headlines may be gone, torture and repression is endemic in Burma as the military, while they bedeck their families in expensive jewels (see recent wedding videos of Burmese society wedding celebrations) cling to power.
I hope that in due course these military people will be put on trial for human rights abuses, there is a precedent for this with trials of Milosevic and the like, and those involved with torture, murder and the suppression of democracy in Burma should wake up each day knowing the bill is a day closer.
